Typically, What is Fast Turnaround Chiller Hire and How Does it Benefit Customers?

Here we delve into a recent project that stemmed from an urgent request from a client for a fast turnaround chiller hire solution.

A temporary chiller installed

The Client

We were contacted by B&S Group (a client we have worked with many times in the past) who were worried about the rising ambient temperatures and the effect this would have on their pharmaceutical storage warehouse.

The products contained have a maximum holding temperature of 25 degrees, which when your holding over two million pounds worth, can lead to major losses if exceeded.

A fast turnaround chiller hire solution was urgently needed.

So Why did the Client Find Itself in this Situation?

A project to install a new warehouse cooling and heating system had been delayed due to holds ups with the supply of a heat pump unit. The delay of around four weeks left the customer exposed to abnormally high spring 2025 temperatures.

Whilst not an immediate issue, it did require addressing as warehouses, whilst they are insulated and have the thermal mass tend to stay cool, also do not cool down easily once the temperature builds over time. Hence, addressing temperature issues before they come over the top is critical.

What Was the Solution to this Clients Critical Cooling Needs?

Time was of the essence for this chiller hire project and clearly required a fast turnaround chiller hire solution.

A site survey was carried out the same day as the call and a plan put in place.

We proposed installing a temporary chiller and buffer tank which was connected with fast install EPMD pipe-work to the customers existing AHU’s.

All relatively simple for a professional rental company.

What are the Key Components of a Fast Turnaround Chiller Hire System?

Key components of a fast turnaround chiller hire system include;

  • A packaged water chiller of a suitable cooling capacity.
  • A buffer tank. A buffer tank adds capacity to a chiller hire system, allows access for filling and air purging and is more reliable than sealed pressurised systems.
  • 10Bar rubber suction/ discharge pipe-work and fittings to connect the component parts. For instance, this project used 3″ hose for the flow and return connection to the chiller. This was then split down into 2x 2″ flow and returns to the internal AHU’s.
  • Power cabling; Temporary power supplies are required for the chiller and other components. Here, we used the redundant chiller supply cable.

The completed installation including a 200kw water chiller, buffer tank and rubber pipework. All fast and simple to install.

How Quickly was this Temporary Cooling System Installed?

Following delivery the chiller hire system was installed in less than 4 hours. This fast turnaround is in the most part due to the modular and portable nature of the components. For instance, hosing is flexible and connected by camloc connectors which saves a lot of time.

Commissioning followed and was reasonably straight forward. The buffer tank was filled and the chiller pump started. With an open vented system the pump uses the tank for head pressure to the impeller. The pump will then push the water around the system forcing the air back to the tank (self purging). In this way, no time consuming air bleeding is required and the system does not need pressurising. In short, its more reliable and quicker to install- both major advantages for temporary chiller hire systems.

We did encounter some debris in the clients water system. This required multiple strainer cleans, but once completed, the system remained clean and reliable.

A 1000kw chiller installed to provide contingency cooling in the event of a failure of the clients systems.
