Chilled Water for Washing
70kw cooling 20,000lt buffer tank- Heat Exchanger
Jersey Royal’s potatoes whilst harvesting in the summer months can come in at temperatures in excess of 25 Degrees.
Importantly, washing in chilled water before packaging cools the potato’s, closing pores and prolongs shelf life. Useful information on potato storage can be found here.
Their washers go through cycles with in excess of 2000lt water refills- three such washers are installed on the site. Undoubtedly, its quite a job to keep up with the volumes.
Although the cooling capacity was not calculated to be high, the large draw-off for washer filling would not be possible at stable supply temperatures without buffering. Hence, we designed a system utilising a large 20,000lt potable water tank for supply to the process.
To isolate between the process and primary chilled water systems, plate heat exchangers were specified. In this way the primary circuit could be glycol filled, obviously avoiding contamination.
Initially, one 100kw plate heat exchanger was installed, however it was found that the full chiller capacity was not being utilised and another was fitted in series. This flexibility neatly illustrates the advantages of a rented system in so much that alterations can be easily made.
Consisting of a 100kw chiller , the primary circuit ran a 20% glycol/ water mix at -2 Degrees. It was found after extensive testing, that this set-point provided optimal usage of the chillers capacity.
The secondary pumping sets can be seen above feeding the water to the factory. Constant loops were used with water drawn off to the washers by means of automated valves. Furthermore, staggering the re-filling of the washers ensured a stable temperature within the process chilled water hire system.
We worked closely with the client through the design and operation of this plant. Day to day operational support and modifications of this plant have ultimately achieved fantastic results. Clearly, renting gives this flexibility.
This system has been in operation for four harvests. The cost for installation and operation have been greatly offset by increased shelf life of the product.
A really nice temporary chilled storage project. This fruit storage warehouse was finished to a high specification and has been contracted initially for 2 years.
Certainly one of the largest and most challenging temperature control projects we have ever carried out. Measuring at 288,000 sq/mt and at a height of 20 metres, this area was partitioned from the main deep chill warehouse for a 15 degree storage chamber.
ACR were very proud to have been chosen to carry out this strategic project for Shetland Island Council. This project was a slow burner from the-off, with multiple visits to the Island, many options were discussed until the final solution was arrived at.
Temporary cooling for chocolate storage. Without doubt one of the most challenging projects we have ever completed. This emergency cooling installation presented challenges in terms of equipment positioning and safe working practices.
