This was a really interesting project from start to finish.
In a nutshell, this project involved bringing mothballed day surgeries back into operation. Day surgeries are as the name suggests smaller/simpler operations that do not involve an overnight stay.
That’s not to say that they are not important in terms of patient’s quality of life and health outcomes in general, which is why this client wanted a speedy solution to the necessary ventilation needs of the unit.
The project was a slow burner mainly because of shifting goal posts and re-designs. However, in the end, we were able to bring a strong solution that surpassed the client’s expectations, giving them massive extra capacity for day surgery operations which fully met the requirements of the HTM 03-01 (2021) guidelines.
We find this a lot. In our experience, clients are unsure of the temporary equipment’s capabilities, and in most instances, are pleasantly surprised by the functionality and efficiencies on offer with the modern systems available for hire.
After much discussion and planning it was agreed that we would supply a Trane IH85 DX heat pump air conditioning unit.
This unit features very technically advanced controls for close and very efficient operation. This includes Bacnet communications which allowed seamless integration into the hospitals BMS systems. Key advantages include, real time temperature monitoring/ adjustments, constantly variable supply air volume and instant status feedback.
Being a surgery a full 100% fresh air requirement was specified at a total delivery rate of 14,500m3/hr to satisfy the requirements of The Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 (2021) for 22 air changes per hour.
Another major advantage is the high efficiencies offered by the heat-pump function and fully automatic night set back options.
All in all, excellent machines which tick major boxes for the client’s needs on all levels.
For this project metal ductwork was selected. This was used to connect the temporary ventilation unit to the clients existing internal ducting. Once install the client’s system was carefully balanced and airflows measured and recorded to prove compliance.
From start to finish this temporary ventilation for a London hospital project was really satisfying to be involved with.
Because of the nature of the application, careful consideration was made in regards of the design and equipment selection. Critically, the completed installation fully met the statuatory requirements of The Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 (2021). This included the important efficiency and carbon reduction elements, of which, the heat-pump function and night set back features offered by the equipment were very useful.
All in all, this project has given the client the use of an important facility that would still be lying fallow. Add to this the improved efficiencies of using modern equipment and it’s easy to see why this client is so pleased with the outcome.

To provide temporary hospital ventilation hire whilst a AHU replacement programme was carried out.
When this Trust needed chiller hire for hospital buildings they turned to ACR for a fast effective solution.
To provide temporary heat pump ventilation hire to a new ambulance triage centre whilst they awaited their new AHU. The AHU would be required to maintain the internal air temperature as well as ventilate the area.
